As discussed in FOA
§ 1.1.1 Working within the IR tradition, Finding Out
About as described here is very much as an extension of the
deep literature of the field of "information retrieval." The
advantage of including Keith van Reijsbergen's textbook on the
FOA CD is that many topics treated so well there need not be
recapitulated in the FOA text.
The series of readings put together by Karen Sparck Jones
(Cambridge University) and Peter Willett (University of
Sheffield) provide another, very rich characterization of some
of the classic research on which modern search engine
technologies are based. It is no surprise, then, that many of
the readings they have selected are also mentioned in various
sections of the FOA text.
Readings in IR is highly recommend as
complimentary reference for use in classrooms using the FOA
text. The listing below provides a listing of where
individual readings in this collection are mentioned in FOA.
