christopher tuttle

hello!
i am a phd-seeking student of the systems and networking group of the department of computer science and engineering at u.c. san diego. in practice, i read papers, take classes, and converse with the most excellent people in the lab. i also drink lots of coffee.

in a previous life, i was a computer science undergrad at carnegie mellon, where life was mostly tech, buggy, and carnival, though maybe not in that order.

stalkers? i am not signed up for any classes for wi05.

personal bits

music is my other passion; i play the bass guitar and some piano. you may recognize some of my favorite artists: balligomingo, blue man group, conjure one, delerium, dido, live, lyle lovett, loreena mckennitt, moby, peter gabriel, philip glass, r.e.m., and seal.

regarding film, i thorougly enjoy the quatsi trilogy, especially koyaanisqatsi.

i have a ham license, callsign kd7ecq. ham radio is a good way to get involved in the community. check out cmu's amateur radio club, w3vc.

abtech got me hooked on pushing, lifting, and making noise. though i'm not working for a production company at the moment, it will probably happen soon.

research bits

my main research project is plush, a tool for remote deployment, management, and debugging. plush is a really neat tool for deploying experiments and services, and it gives us a great foundation for reasoning about distributed system abstractions.

while at cmu, i worked with the aura group for nearly a year. their goal is to create a ubiquitous computing environment supporting task migration, modularization of resources, and a variety of other really cool features. the web site has not been updated in a while, but the project is very active.

as a project for "parallel computer architecture and programming" (15-495 fall 2002), jay pujara, jason summerfield, and i wrote a parallel version of gzip. if there is enough demand, i'll clean up the source and post it.
