Email and Virus/Worm Infections

Virus Reporting and Information sites

Attachments

The primary way a virus spreads is through email attachments. When you launch (double-click) the attachment, you activate the virus.

Never launch an email attachment from within an email client window. The attachment must be pre-scanned with Norton AntiVirus. As new virus strains may arise that antivirus scanners are not able to detect it is best to refrain from opening attachments unless they are work related, or you are already expecting it. **For this reason it is best practice to verify any received email attachment by contacting the originator via telephone BEFORE opening the attachment.

How to Check Email Attachments for Virus Infection

Eudora

Note - Ideally, all incoming attachments are automatically saved to the folder specified in the Tools/attachments properties. Inspect the attachment for virii per 'Procedure 1'.

However, a more frequent issue has arisen whereby Eudora places a pointer in the 'attachment' folder - not the actual file. If the attachment has a filesize of 1KB or 2KB the attached file is more than likely not the actual document. Please refer to 'Procedure 2' for saving, antiviral check, and opening the document.

Procedure 1:

  • Open a Windows Explorer window to the 'attachment' designated directory
  • Locate the attachment
  • Right-mouse-click over the file
  • Select "Scan with Norton Antivirus". Wait for Norton to report file status results via a popup window.
  • If a virus is detected notify csehelp immediately.

Procedure 2:

  • In the Eudora email message right-mouse-click on the document icon.
  • Select 'Save Attachment As' menu option.
  • Save attachment to designated attachment folder
  • Open a Windows Explorer window to the same designated attachment folder.
  • Right mouse click the file. Select 'Scan with Norton Antivirus'. Wait for Norton to report file status results via a popup window.
  • If a virus is detected notify csehelp immediately.

OutLook 2000/XP

Note - Attachments can NOT be moved/copied from within the OL98/2K 'Preview' window. One must double-click the email message thereby launching a 'message' window. From there you can copy the file to an directory under E: (such as E:\Transfer or E:\Attachments).

  • Double-left-click the email message
  • Copy attachment to desktop or other directory
  • Right-mouse-click over the file
  • Select "Scan with Norton Antivirus" Wait for Norton to report file status results via a popup window. Email CSEHelp immediately if a virus/Trojan is found!

If for any reason Norton AntiVirus is either not installed or functioning correctly on your PC send email to CSEHelp.
